Prosecution wants Saraki arrested for absence in assets trial
Senate President Bukola Saraki, on Friday, refused to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting over the 13-count charge of false declaration of assets filed against him by the federal government; prompting prosecution counsel, M.S. Hassan to call for his arrest.
Saraki’s counsel, Mahmud Magaji, argued that the senate president decided not to appear in court because there is no substantive Attorney General of the Federation who is supposed to properly file a charge against him as contained in the law setting up the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Hassan countered the argument, saying that the attorney general is not the only person empowered to bring charges against a senate president.
Saraki is also at a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an interim injunction to stop the trial by the code of conduct tribunal. A judgment of the Federal High Court on Thursday summoned all parties to appear before it to determine whether or not an interim injunction halting the trial should be granted against the federal government or not.
