Boko Haram: Adamawa varsity reopens, recruits 80 hunters, vigilate, to boost security

The authorities of Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, have recruited 80 vigilante men and hunters to ensure the security of the university community. Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Joshua Shall, disclosed this to newsmen in Mubi on Thursday, just as the institution resumes academic activities.


Shall said that the institution was aware of the complementary role played by the vigilante groups and hunters assisting the military to recapture Mubi town in Adamawa  after it was over ran by insurgents in October 2014,and therefore decided to recruited them to continue with their complementary role.


Shall ,who said that 95 per cent of the students had resumed for classes, stated that the institution lost 11 staff and three students, while property worth N5 billion were destroyed by the insurgents. ” They (insurgents) broke into all offices, staff quarters, hostels, laboratories, stores and looted properties,” he said.

The vice chancellor said that the school managed to re-opened following the intervention it received from TETFund which supported it with N250 million. He said that TETFund also approved a substantial amount of money for the institution which his management was now trying to access to sustain the ongoing rehabilitation work in the university.

While lauding TETFund for the support, Shall also commended the national body of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), for donating N21 million to its members in the Adamawa university.

He said the university had also compiled the lists of damages incurred by its staff and submitted same to the Victim Support Fund, for possible assistance. ” We hope that when the fund commence rendering assistance to victims of insurgency, we will be remembered”, Shall said.

Recall that on May 19th, 2015, a suspected male suicide bomber yesterday afternoon attacked the Garkida Cattle Market in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing no fewer than nine persons and wounding several others.

Reports from the area indicated that the incident occurred in the afternoon when the suspect who posed as a cattle dealer detonated the explosives on entry into the adamawa market.
Another version of the story however, had it that the bomb had earlier been planted within the area of vegetable sellers in the Adamawa market from where the explosive went off.

The member representing Gombi constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Jerry Kumdisi confirmed the incident even as the police authorities could not confirm or deny the attack, saying that the incident fell within the purview of the military.

Garkida, where the early missionaries settled in Adamawa State and had witnessed series of Boko Haram attacks in the past.
Also to be noted that in June 2014,  the Adamawa State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Stakeholders condemned in strong terms bomb attack in Kabang, a suburb in Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, which occurred last Sunday, 1 June, 2014.

The group described the incident as a huge let down to residents, victims and their relations, who live around Adamawa vicinity and an attempt to decimate a large population of Nigerians by Boko Haram insurgents.  “The entire members of this pressure group wish to express our extreme anguish and regret over the wanton decimation of a large population of Nigerians by Boko Haram insurgents.

“Specifically, we condemn in strong terms the recent bomb attack in Kabang, a suburb in Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State which occurred last Sunday 1, June 2014. The incident was a huge let down to residents, victims and their relations who live around the vicinity.”

The bombing, which occurred at a football viewing centre claimed over 20 lives, and several others injured from the gruesome murder.The Adamawa elders, who also condemned the politicisation of insecurity challenges in the country, said they were totally sickened by what they called the pettiness of cheap political gimmicks surrounding Boko Haram’s horrific activities in the recent past.

Mindful of Federal Government’s determination to stem the tide of these reckless killings of innocent citizens by Boko Haram insurgents in Adamawa and other states since 2009 to date, the group thumped up to the military for their resolve to secure the over 200 Chibok School Girls recently abducted by the insurgents and wanton decimation of a large population of Nigerians by Boko Haram insurgents.

The group further commended the recent selection of some African leaders drawn from different countries in the continent to fashion out a frame work to tackle the menace of terrorism in three North Eastern States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, describing it as a step in the right direction.

“We commend the selected African leaders drawn from South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana, Congo and Cote Divoire to fashion out a frame work to tackle the menace of terrorism in Nigerian’s three North Eastern States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe is a commendable step in the right direction.

“We are confident that this powerful body shall decisively deal with the challenges of terrorism not only in Nigeria, but the African continent as a whole.

For them, form. President Goodluck Jonathan deserves support and commendation for his doggedness and untiring efforts to stem the tide of insurgent in the Country, despite all odds.
The group also used the medium to condemn then Gov. Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state over the recent statement credited to him, in which he attributed insurgency in the North East to both the President and the country’s military, saying that such allegation without a verifiable proof is baseless, null and void.

“To us, his allegations are baseless, null and void, most especially that he could not attach verifiable evidences to buttress any of his claims in a letter he wrote to 19 northern governors on the issue.
